January 2021: Local Challenge

Just as charity begins at home, so does climate and ecological action begin in your local area!

So pick one of more of the following challenges to do this month – or make up one of your own.

  •  ACTION: Avoid Amazon for a month (all those vans driving to your door and the overzealous packaging!) and try to source things locally instead.
  • ACTION: Double the amount of locally produced, in-season food that you eat this month to reduce both food miles and the heating of greehouses. See our page on better food options for local suppliers.
  • ACTION: Go foraging in your local green space – you’ll be amazed what’s there. See the Woodland Trust’s month-by-month foraging guide for information.
  • ACTION: Pick a single week and write down everything you buy and where it was made or grown – and then consider how you can change your sources. An exercise in awareness!
  • GET INVOLVED: One of the biggest things we can do is to vote for people who will tackle our environmental and climate crises. In May 2021, Bristol City Council and the West of England Combined Authority will hold local elections. Research the candidates, and put polling day in your diary – and apply for a postal vote now if you want one.
  • GET INVOLVED: Councils are increasingly considering ‘green’ schemes to decrease car use, such as more bike lanes and Liveable Neighbourhoods. If you want these initiatives in your area, write to your councillor this month and say so.
  • AMPLIFY: Tell your friends and family about the challenges you’re taking this month and ask them to join in.
